Handcrafted Sandals: The Complete Guide to Quality, Craftsmanship & Care
Simple Tips to Keep Every Pair of Sandals Looking Great
Whether you've just picked up your first pair of handcrafted sandals or you're building a collection, proper care can keep them comfortable and looking fresh for years. Each material needs something a little different — and understanding what you're caring for makes all the difference.
Before we get into the care routine, here's why these sandals deserve that extra bit of attention in the first place.
What makes a handcrafted sandal different
A handcrafted sandal isn't just a shoe. It's hours of work from a skilled artisan, leather chosen piece by piece, stitches sewn by hand, and a philosophy that refuses the shortcuts of mass production. When you slip into a genuinely handmade pair, you feel it immediately — in how it sits on your foot, how the leather softens after a few wears, how it holds up season after season.
Material selection. A true handcrafted sandal starts with carefully chosen leather — usually Italian or Greek — selected one piece at a time. Each hide has its own texture and character. Small variations in grain or color aren't defects; they're the signature of a natural material.
Construction by hand. The upper is cut, stitched, and assembled on a craftsman's bench. The sole is bonded and often stitched in separate stages. Every pair passes through the hands of an artisan who checks the seams, the finishing, the fit.
Comfort that builds over time. A mass-produced sandal peaks on day one and goes downhill. A quality leather sandal softens, molds to the shape of your foot, and becomes more comfortable the more you wear it. That break-in period is a feature of real leather, not a flaw.
Built to be repaired. A handcrafted sole can be replaced. A loose stitch can be re-sewn. That's the opposite of fast fashion — extend the life of the shoe instead of throwing it away.
The handcrafted brands we carry
Every brand in our collection covers a different style and price point — but they all share the same foundation: genuine materials, attention to detail, and construction that lasts.
Ateneo — Classic Greek handmade with a "one sandal for life" philosophy. Clean lines, earthy tones, and leather that ages beautifully.
Ragazza — For those who want their sandal to make a statement. Fashion-forward silhouettes and eye-catching details on a proper handcrafted base.
Fantasy Sandals — The definition of a comfortable summer sandal. Anatomical footbed, lightweight construction, and a design philosophy that proves handcrafted doesn't have to mean heavy.
Iris — Feminine lines with a strong focus on seasonal colors and soft leathers. Subtle detailing, but the quality shows the moment you hold the shoe.
TFP Collection — Our own line. Designed based on years of customer feedback, made in Greece, with leather we select ourselves, at a price that reflects cutting out the middle layers.
Estil — Genuine leather, made in Greece, available exclusively online. Real handcrafted quality without the traditional retail markup.
Mariella Fabiani — Greek design sensibility applied to handcrafted footwear. Refined lines, careful material choices, and the understated elegance of Greek shoemaking.
Now, on to the care guide — organized by material so you can find exactly what your pair needs.
1. Leather Sandals
What to know: Leather is durable and gets more beautiful with age, but it needs moisture and protection to prevent cracking or drying out. Think of it like skin — it needs to stay nourished.
Care tips:
2. Suede Sandals
What to know: Suede is soft, velvety, and has a look nothing else can match — but it's sensitive to water and stains, and needs a slightly different approach.
Care tips:
3. Nubuck Sandals
What to know: Nubuck is similar to suede but slightly tougher — it's made from the outer side of the hide, buffed to create a soft finish. Still needs gentle care.
Care tips:
4. Knit or Fabric Sandals
What to know: Knit and woven fabric sandals are breathable, lightweight, and perfect for warm weather — but they stain more easily than leather.
Care tips:
5. Slides
What to know: Slides are designed for easy wear and are often made from rubber, EVA foam, or a mix of materials. Low maintenance, but a little care goes a long way.
Care tips:
6. Ponyskin (Haircalf)
What to know: Ponyskin — also called haircalf — is real leather with the hair left on. It's delicate, stylish, and unlike anything else, but it demands respect.
Care tips:
7. Cork Footbeds (Plakton, Inter-bios)
What to know: Cork footbeds mold to your feet over time, which is why they become so comfortable. But cork absorbs moisture and can dry out or crack if neglected.
Care tips:
8. Synthetic Leather (PU, Vegan Leather, etc.)
What to know: Synthetic leather is easy to maintain and offers a vegan alternative — but it can crack or peel over time without care, especially when exposed to heat.

General Tips for All Sandals
In Short
Caring for handcrafted sandals isn't complicated — it's about regular attention and a few simple habits. Clean gently, protect the material, and don't let them sit damp or dirty. A little effort goes a long way.
When you buy a handcrafted sandal, you're not just paying for a product — you're paying for the hands that made it, the materials that went into it, and the years of wear you'll get out of it. Take care of them, and they'll take care of you for summers to come.
